Why Petrified Forest National Park deserves to be a destination, not just a detour

鈥淧eople come to Petrified Forest unintentionally, often. They're on their way, typically, to or from the Grand Canyon or during spring break, they鈥檙e headed to spring training,鈥 said park ranger Jessica Barnett.听聽

The park is right off Interstate 40 in eastern Arizona, about three hours from and 3陆 hours away from by car.

鈥淭he really great part of this park is there's something for everyone,鈥 Barnett said. 鈥淚 think people don't realize it when they come in. They pass it by because they're like: 鈥淗mm, petrified wood. What's good about that?' There鈥檚 so much more.鈥

Here鈥檚 what travelers should know about Petrified Forest, the latest national park in 望月直播 TODAY鈥檚 yearlong series.

What is special about Petrified Forest National Park?

Petrified Forest calls itself a . It preserves more than 200 million years of history, including its namesake .听

It鈥檚 the only place fossils have ever been found. fossils have also been discovered in the park, but dinosaurs only make up a fraction of the prehistoric life that once thrived across its more than 221,000 acres.

鈥淓verything else is an ancient reptile or ancient mammal ancestor or ancient plants,鈥 Barnett said.听

Visitors can see paleontologists work on a variety of fossils and artifacts at the park鈥檚 or ask park rangers about Petrified Forest鈥檚 more modern history.

鈥淲e're working on rehabilitating our prairie dog population, so maybe someday we'll get to reintroduce the , which is the most endangered mammal in North America,鈥 Barnett said.听

The park also preserves a portion of historic .

What Native American tribes were in the Petrified Forest?

鈥淲e have an incredible record of people, human history in the park more than 13,000 years,鈥 Barnett said.

Is the Petrified Forest cursed?

鈥淭here is this really interesting history of people taking petrified wood and then bad things happening to them and them associating it with having taken the petrified wood,鈥 Barnett said. 鈥淚 think that's more guilt than anything.鈥

She said the park prefers to focus on the good.

鈥溾嬧婻ather than you're bad and you're going to be cursed if you take the wood, you're a good person if you leave it behind for future generations. That's such a huge part of the Park Service mission.鈥

How long does it take to go through Petrified Forest National Park?

鈥淵ou can do all of the main road hikes in a day,鈥 Barnett said.听

The park鈥檚 website suggests ranging from an hour to a half day for travelers passing through, but visitors who like to get will need more time.

鈥淵ou could easily spend two or three days in the park and really experience it to kind of its fullest potential,鈥 Barnett said.

The park鈥檚 operating hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST. Guests who are already in the park gates by 5 p.m. can usually stay until around sunset. Visitors who want to stay later to stargaze in the certified can get a free Dark Sky Viewing Permit at the park鈥檚 Painted Desert Visitor Center.

There are no lodges or campgrounds in the park, but is allowed in the park with a free permit.

Can you drive through Petrified Forest National Park?

Yes. The park鈥檚 main road spans 28 miles and takes about an hour to travel by car. There is for private vehicles.听

鈥淲e try to tell people, if they're going east, to come in the south entrance because GPS always brings people to the north entrance and then have to go in and come back out,鈥 Barnett said. 鈥淚f you're going any other direction, you can start at either end of the park.鈥

Visitors can see petrified wood scattered through the park鈥檚 southern end and clustered in five large petrified wood deposits referred to as forests: , , and Black Forest.听

鈥淵ou have a huge range in the colors of the petrified wood, the textures that you get, and even the way it looks at the surface whether it's sparkly and like individual crystals that you can see, that look like a geode, or if it's all grown together and it looks like a candle wax,鈥 Barnett said.听 鈥淓very single stop has something really incredible there.鈥

Is Petrified Forest National Park worth it?

鈥淚t's worth a trip on its own,鈥 Barnett said. 鈥淚t is such an incredible place if you know what it's about. If you don鈥檛 know, If you're driving on the interstate, it鈥檚 like: 鈥楾hat looks like a bunch of grassy fields. What could be interesting about this place?鈥 And then you get into the park, you go over the hill, and you're like: 鈥楾he Painted Desert is amazing! It's so beautiful!鈥

To make the most of trips, she encourages visitors to talk to park rangers who can tell them more about the park.

鈥淭here's such amazing history, archaeology, modern biology, geology, paleontology,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great place, and I hope more people come just to see it.鈥
